Turnitin Originality – a new Standard in Academic Integrity
With the new flagship Originality, Turnitin continues on its path of excellence with new system architecture designed so that it can easily be adapted to implement solutions to battle current and future challenges to academic integrity – and to create successful students.
Formative learning – allow your students to reach a higher level of academic writing
Although the educational possibilities are often emphasised, plagiarism control has long been seen and used as simply that – plagiarism control. Students are introduced to it when they begin their studies or start a course and then it is used at the end to catch plagiarism…and little else.
Those who have made mistakes, those who have not received or absorbed adequate education and those who have not been discouraged (or who may have been desperate enough in their study situation) from taking unauthorised shortcuts are all treated in the same way. Digital tools, of course, have little or no chance of distinguishing between these situations and so these students end up with disciplinary boards for investigation or nothing happens with them at all, depending on how well examiners follow policy. Unfortunately, classic plagiarism control is not something that solves the real problem, but it rather drives a spiral of new creative cheating methods and new countermeasures and, perhaps in the worst case, stress and anxiety in students.
Turnitin has therefore thought a few steps ahead and, with its new product Originality, wants to tackle the root cause instead of the symptom and to actively help students make the right decision and to develop their writing. Academic Integrity work in the future will focus on formative learning rather than fearmongering so that students will instead be guided to a hihger level of academic writing using a method that actually works. Turnitin Draft Coach continuously checks for similarities whilst students draft work; when they are ready, they can check their sources and matches in the same way that they check their grammar and spelling before submitting their work. If a reference is missing, Citation Assistant steps in and reminds students of the correct citation methods.
“What the next level of working with academic integrity will look like around the world”
The Citation Assistant finds missing citations and teaches proper citation style
Using this formative approach, students can rethink poor decisions, correct any mistakes and can learn proper writing techniques. Originality, via clear analytics, gives the institution the information it needs to be able to see exactly which students need more help with their writing.
By being able to compare texts forensically with texts previously written by the same student to ensure authorship, identify reuse of code in programming tasks and very clearly and accurately report text manipulations intended to circumvent academic integrity checks, Originality is a very powerful tool.
“The rapid shift to online learning provides different opportunities for misconduct. While a holistic approach to academic integrity is advocated, it is likely that gaps will emerge. We must be continually updating the toolkit of support and detection measures.”

Numbers and values are all well and good but they can harm rather than help if they are not given in context. With Turnitin Originality, teachers and administrators are given dashboards and reports which can make a genuine difference when it comes to spotting and supporting students who need a little extra assistance.
Dashboards help identify risks and conduct cohort analysis
Reports show results within the context of students’ assignments
Clear and actionable data points provided for every submission
