We wish all our readers and users a very Merry Christmas and keep our fingers crossed for a Happier New Year!
As for so many others, there was no OEB Berlin for us this year and given the development of the pandemic, there will probably not be a BETT London for us in January either. We are therefore aiming for SET 26-28 April and hope to meet and talk about educational technology at Kistamässan instead!

What is the Apache Log4j Vulnerability?
On December 9, 2021, the public was made aware of a vulnerability (CVE-2021-44228) affecting Apache Log4j 2 versions 2.0-beta9 to 2.14.1. The vulnerability has a severity of 10/10. Apache Log4j is a Java-based logging tool that is part of Apache Logging Services used in applications. By exploiting this, a remote attacker can possibly take control of a system that is affected by this vulnerability.
Log4j is also discussed in connection with another vulnerability that occurred when Apache released version 2.15.0 on December 10, 2021 to fix CVE-2021-44228. However, our company did not implement that security update.
On December 13, 2021, Apache Log4j released version 2.16.0 to address CVE-2021-44228 and CVE-2021-45046.

Log4j and Turnitin
How does vulnerability affect Turnitin or Turnitin users?
Turnitin uses Java-based technology, which is why the Turnitin team has investigated and mitigated the effects of the vulnerability. You can be assured that Turnitin monitors its systems and has no known exploitation of the vulnerability.
What should Turnitin’s customers do now?
No action is currently required from Turnitin’s customers or users.
Log4j and D2L | Brightspace
D2L says “When we discovered the bug in the Java logging tool on December 10, we took immediate action to monitor, assess and mitigate any risks. At present, our investigation shows that the lack of security has not affected D2L, Brightspace or our customers. We continue to evaluate and monitor the situation and will keep our customers informed of any updates. ”
Digital frontrunner Peyman Vahedi leaves his position as principal for a new career outside the school.
The newspaper Ångermanland (SWE) announces that Peyman Vahedi, finalist in the Digitization Leader of the Year 2018 and pioneer when it comes to digitization in schools, chooses to leave the school world for a new career. We have had good contacts with Peyman over the years and wish you good luck and hopefully see you later! Feel free to watch the conversation between Peyman and Minister of Education Anna Ekström about experiences from the early phase of the pandemic here https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?ref=watch_permalink&v=920640441790500
Beyond Labz pilot project launched
We are currently investigating the interest in Scandinavia to participate in a pilot project together with Beyond Labz, a virtual laboratory system. Beyond Labz is just as suitable for primary and secondary school as for higher education and offers fantastic opportunities to strengthen education in science.
– Pupils and students can participate fully in science teaching even in a situation where distance education is preferred / necessary
– Pupils and students can improve their knowledge in science by practicing – at home.
– Pupils and students can use chemicals and laboratory materials indefinitely in a 100% safe way.
– Pupils and students can revisit lab lessons in which they need to strengthen their knowledge without having to have access to a physical lab, teacher or supervisor.
We have a small number of places left in the pilot program to distribute across Scandinavia and if you are interested in participating in the pilot, contact us as soon as possible!

It is said that Christmas is for the little ones
Maybe there are more places that should have that at its foundation? Here is a Christmas card from TED with Japanese innovative thinking in that direction!

Last but not least – The future after 2021
We have several new collaborations with innovative EdTech suppliers that will begin in early 2022 and we are really looking forward to introducing them! Is your organisation also considering the future in a longer perspective?
